Deep Blue at the Chengdu STIDA Awards

It’s always a real pleasure to attend the Sichuan Taiwan Industrial Design Awards and this year was especially good. Our hosts looked after us really well and I had the good fortune to visit the IDING design studio owned by 某男子 an incredibly talented and humble designer that is the future of Chinese Industrial Design. I also got to meet my old friend and ex employee Josh Fischer (ex JBL) and see his new venture into interiors under 818 Design and meet some new friends too. We had some interesting discussions between talks and events and it was also very interesting to see the difference of opinion between the practicing industrial designers and the theoretical academics that have no experience but plenty to say! Having been practicing and working for some of the world’s largest brands and trained many of the heads of those departments I tend to side with the people who have made their careers out of doing rather than theorizing. However as a Professor, external examiner, advisory board member, lecturer and tutor I have to concede a few points. I do worry that Design Education is becoming saturated by academia that are in teaching because they couldn’t perform In industry and things like PhDs are being given a higher status than real life experience, but sadly, this seems to be the way of the world! If you can’t do, teach, if you can’t teach, teach sports!
